A familiar haunt for film companies

Already familiar with film and television companies, Minterne with High Stoy and Dogbury Hill was the setting for Thomas Hardy’s novel ‘The Woodlanders.’ Minterne House featured as Great Hintock House in that novel and the oaks referred to in the frontispiece are those which are still standing at Minterne Seat today.

The feature film 'Tom Jones' shot in 1963 in which Susannah York played Sophie Western to Albert Finney's Tom, was filmed at Minterne and Cerne Abbey.

This was followed in 1967 when Minterne was also the location for scenes in John Schlesinger's film adaptation of 'Far from the Madding Crow', which starred Julie Christie in the role of Bathsheba Everdene, Alan Bates as Gabriel Oak, Peter Finch as William Boldwood & Terence Stamp as Sgt Troy.

Westcountry Television Ltd filmed ‘Stranger than Fiction’ at Minterne in 1998.

In the late 90’s a TV film of Thomas Hardy’s ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ was made by LWT Limited on Dogbury Hill at Minterne.

July 2006 saw Minterne House and Gardens as the setting for a German Television Drama based on a love story ‘A Wedding in the Country’ by Cornish writer, Rosamunde Pilcher, which was filmed by FFP New Media GmbH.

Most recently in February 2009, Lambent Productions filmed 'The Russians are coming,' a documentary for Channel 4 which was screened on Friday 7th August 2009.
